Does Sealmetrics comply with CNIL guidelines for analytics without consent?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Yes. Sealmetrics complies with the requirements set by the French CNIL (Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés) to operate in “consent exemption” mode for audience measurement.

That means you can legally measure traffic and conversions in France without displaying a cookie banner – as long as you only use Sealmetrics for the exempted purposes (audience measurement, technical performance, optimization).

CNIL requirements (and how Sealmetrics complies)

  • Limited purpose → Sealmetrics is used strictly for audience measurement and site optimization. No profiling, advertising, retargeting, or data resale.

  • No cross-site tracking → Sealmetrics only uses first-party identifiers and session IDs. No third-party cookies, no shared IDs across domains.

  • IP anonymization → Sealmetrics didn't work with IPs by default.

  • Cookie lifetime ≤ 13 months → Session identifiers in Sealmetrics are temporary and do not reset on each visit.

  • Data retention ≤ 25 months → Sealmetrics enforces strict retention periods. Old data is automatically purged or aggregated.

  • No mixing with other data systems → Data collected in Sealmetrics is not combined with CRM, user profiles, or other external datasets.

  • Segregation between clients → Each customer’s data is processed independently. No data sharing across clients.

  • User information and opt-out → We provide a mechanism for visitors to opt-out of measurement at any time, in line with CNIL requirements.

  • No reuse for Sealmetrics’ own purposes → We never use customer data to train models, improve our product, or for any secondary purpose without consent.

  • Transfers & proxy architecture → Sealmetrics servers are hosted in the EU. No uncontrolled transfers occur outside the EEA. Where transfers are required, they are protected under GDPR mechanisms.

Important to know

  • The CNIL exemption only applies to audience measurement. If you combine analytics with features such as eCommerce tracking, attribution, or user profiling, you may still need consent.

  • CNIL published an auto-evaluation tool (July 2025) so that site owners and providers can check compliance.

Conclusion

Sealmetrics was designed from day one to meet CNIL’s strict requirements. If your company operates in France (or targets French users), Sealmetrics allows you to:

  • Measure traffic and conversions without consent banners.

  • Stay compliant with GDPR, ePrivacy, and CNIL rules.

  • Trust your data as your Single Source of Truth.
